Early Life

Born on June 17, 1980, in Lynwood, California, Venus Ebony Starr Williams is the daughter of Richard Williams and Oracene Price. When she was 10 years old, her family relocated from Compton, California, to West Palm Beach, Florida, so that she and her sister Serena could enroll in Rick Macci’s tennis academy. At the age of 11, Richard Williams withdrew his daughters from national junior tennis tournaments. At that time, Venus held a 63–0 record on the United States Tennis Association junior tour and was ranked No. 1 for under-12 players in Southern California. In 1995, Richard took his daughters out of Macci’s academy and assumed full responsibility for their coaching.

Career

Turning professional at the age of 14 in 1994, Venus made her Grand Slam debut at the 1998 Australian Open, where she faced her sister Serena in the second round. This marked the first time they competed against each other as professionals, with Venus emerging victorious before losing to World No. 3 Lindsay Davenport in the third round. The sisters faced off against each other 24 times throughout their professional careers.

Venus has achieved the World No. 1 ranking in women’s tennis three times, totaling 11 weeks at the top.
