Early Life

Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg, known as PewDiePie, was born on October 24, 1989, in Gothenburg, Sweden, to parents Lotta Kristine Johanna and Ulf Christian Kjellberg. His mother is an esteemed Chief Information Officer, and his father is a corporate executive. He has an elder sister, Fanny. During his high school days, Felix would skip classes to indulge in video games. He completed high school at Göteborgs Högre Samskola and initially pursued Industrial Economics and Technology Management at Chalmers University of Technology. However, finding no interest in the curriculum, he left the university. Notably, PewDiePie discontinued his studies not to build a YouTube career, as is commonly believed. Despite disinterest in his academic pursuits, he retained a passion for Photoshop and maintained a love for video games, selling photoshopped images to save up for a computer.

YouTube

On December 19, 2006, Felix joined YouTube under the channel name “Pewdie.” He chose “pew” due to its resemblance to a laser sound. His early content comprised Call of Duty gameplay and vlogs. As he misplaced his Pewdie channel password temporarily, he established PewDiePie on April 29, 2010. This new channel featured content focused on Call of Duty, Minecraft, and horror/action games. For instance, he showcased his best CoD moments with spirited commentary and edits. His Minecraft videos included ‘Let’s Plays,’ where he simply played the game.

Early Success

PewDiePie introduced Amnesia gameplay videos at a certain juncture, which resonated with YouTube audiences and propelled his channel’s growth. By July 2012, he had reached 1 million subscribers, increasing to 2 million by September 2012. Subsequently, he signed with MCN Machinima and later moved to Maker Studios in October 2012.

YouTube’s Premier Star

During 2012 and 2013, PewDiePie experienced unparalleled growth on YouTube. In 2013 alone, his subscriber count surged from 3.5 million to 19 million. That year, he gained a new subscriber every second, totaling 1.037 per second. PewDiePie amassed 1.3 billion video views in that year, culminating as YouTube’s most-subscribed channel.

Assisted by Maker Studios, he launched a PewDiePie iPhone app. Despite voicing reservations about Maker Studios’ parent company, Disney, he eventually created a website and online store to complement the successful app.

In 2014, his channel obtained 14 million subscribers and garnered 4.1 billion views, surpassing other channels by a considerable margin. His monthly average video views in 2015 amounted to 300 million.

Return To Twitch

March of 2023 saw PewDiePie making a surprise return to Twitch after years of channel inactivity, following signing an exclusive deal with YouTube to stream in May of 2020. Introducing a new concept called PewDiePie Infinity, he cleverly utilized the channel to stream an endless loop of his old content, boasting 1.5 million followers on the platform currently.

Controversies

PewDiePie encountered controversy in February 2017, resulting in the loss of his YouTube Red show due to the inclusion of antisemitic references in some videos. He defended the videos as being sarcastic, aiming to critique people’s willingness to do anything for money, no matter how controversial. Notably, an instance involved paying individuals through the website ‘Fiverr’ to hold up a sign stating “Death to all Jews.” Additionally, a viral “subscribe to PewDiePie” movement emerged, although it has been misappropriated in extreme contexts by at least two mass murderers. PewDiePie has distanced himself from this meme and condemned the criminal acts associated with it.

Personal Life

In 2011, PewDiePie met Marzia Bisognin from Italy, initiating an online friendship that blossomed into a romantic relationship. Subsequently, in the same year, he helped launch her YouTube channel, ‘CutiePieMarzia,’ focusing on fashion, makeup, books, movies, and beauty, which later gained substantial popularity on the platform. After residing in Sweden and Italy for some time, the couple settled in Brighton and Hove, England, where they tied the knot in August 2019. They lead a private life in the coastal town, accompanied by their pugs, Edgar and Maya. Notably, the couple announced the expectancy of their first child in February 2023.

In 2019, the couple faced challenges when their home in Japan was robbed, impacting their plans to relocate due to COVID-19 regulations. Eventually, by May 2022, they successfully moved to Japan with a five-year business visa.
