Kevin Costner’s Wealth and Earnings
Kevin Costner, the American actor, producer, and director, boasts a net worth of $250 million. During the 1980s and 1990s, he was among the highest-paid actors globally, mainly because of successful movies such as “Dances with Wolves,” which he both directed and starred in, and “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.”
In 1991, Kevin gained $50 million, largely from his backend points in “Dances with Wolves,” equivalent to $110 million today. The movie clinched seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture. A year later, he brought in $40 million from backend points for “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.”
For his role in the 1995 hit film “Waterworld,” Kevin earned a substantial $14 million. To date, Costner holds two Academy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, one Primetime Emmy Award, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards. His work on the TV series “Yellowstone” has recently received critical acclaim and popularity.
Compensation from “Yellowstone”
Prior to filming the fifth season of “Yellowstone,” Kevin inked a fresh deal with Paramount, elevating his fee to $1.2 million per episode for a planned 16-episode season divided into two parts. The first segment aired between November 2022 and January 2023. Costner’s earnings for the fifth season will reach $19.2 million if the second part gets filmed. If a sixth season goes into production, his per-episode salary will increase to $1.5 million, totaling $24 million for the season.

Early Days and Career Kickoff
Kevin Michael Costner was born in Lynwood, California, on January 18, 1955, to Sharon Rae (née Tedrick), a welfare worker, and William Costner, an electrician who later worked at Southern California Edison. The youngest of three brothers, Costner spent his childhood in Compton, California, practicing the Baptist faith.
Throughout his teenage years, Costner relocated several times due to his father’s profession. He attended Mt. Whitney High School and completed his education at Villa Park High School in Orange County in 1973. Graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in marketing and finance from California State University, Fullerton, in 1978, Costner delved into acting post-college, inspired by actor Richard Burton, who urged him to pursue his hidden dream.
Costner’s journey to Hollywood involved acting classes, odd jobs, auditions, and financial struggles. Despite the challenges, his efforts paid off as he gradually stepped into acting full-time in the 1980s.
On-Screen Career
Costner’s breakthrough came with the 1987 film “The Untouchables,” followed by the 1990 hit “Dances with Wolves,” which he directed and starred in – landing him two Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Picture. Despite his feature film debut in “Sizzle Beach, U.S.A.” (1978/1981), he gained recognition with roles in “The Untouchables,” “Bull Durham” (1988), and “Field of Dreams” (1989).
Costner’s cinematic journey continued with projects like “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” (1991), “JFK” (1991), “The Bodyguard” (1992), and “A Perfect World” (1993). Nevertheless, some subsequent films like “The War” (1994), “Waterworld” (1995), and “The Postman” (1997) faced criticism and commercial disappointment, with the latter earning multiple Golden Raspberry Awards.
He maintained his acting presence with movies such as “Tin Cup” (1996), “Message in a Bottle” (1999), and “Thirteen Days” (2000), among others. His TV debut arrived in 2012 with the History Channel miniseries “Hatfields & McCoys,” drawing record viewership of 13.9 million. Subsequently, he starred in various films and embarked on his maiden regular television role in 2018’s “Yellowstone.”

Business Interests
Interests
Costner opened an attraction called Tatanka: The Story of the Bison in June 2004, located one mile south of Deadwood, South Dakota, on U.S. Route 85. The aim was to provide an educational space for people to learn about America’s history of westward expansion. Alongside this endeavor, he also invested in the Midnight Star Casino in Deadwood. A legal dispute arose when he dismissed the casino’s managers, Francis and Carla Caneva, in July 2004. Subsequently, a judge mandated him to pay a portion of $6.1 million to buy out the Canevas as his business partners. In 2006, Kevin sought a review from the South Dakota Supreme Court after an accountant he had hired assessed the casino’s market value at $3.1 million.
Personal Life
After graduating in 1978, Costner married Cindy Silva, his college sweetheart, with whom he has three children. Unfortunately, their marriage ended in divorce in 1994, with Kevin agreeing to an $80 million settlement with Cindy Silva, marking one of the most costly divorces in Hollywood at the time.
Post his divorce from Cindy Silva, Kevin had a son with Bridget Rooney, who hails from the family behind the Pittsburgh Steelers. Bridget is also related to actresses Kate Mara and Rooney Mara – her nieces.
Additionally, Kevin has been romantically linked with activist Birgit Cunningham and model/actress Elle Macpherson. In 2004, he tied the knot with model and handbag designer Christine Baumgartner, with whom he shares three children.
Divorce Settlements
In the 1990s, Costner paid his first wife, Cindy Silva, an $80 million divorce settlement. Adjusted for inflation, this equates to a $160 million settlement in today’s dollars.
On May 2, 2023, Christine Baumgartner filed for divorce after 18 years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. Initially refraining from seeking spousal support due to a prenuptial agreement, Christine later requested $250,000 in monthly support. This amount excluded expenses related to their children. Christine stated Kevin’s 2023 earnings were $19.5 million, with the family’s total expenses reaching $6.6 million yearly, including costs for property maintenance and vacations.
A breakdown of the family’s 2022 expenses detailed various costs including house, beach club, and household-related expenditures, amounting to almost $6 million in total.
Christine also mentioned that Kevin was offered $250 million for his Aspen property and disclosed other real estate holdings.
Real Estate
Costner’s real estate portfolio includes remarkable properties across the United States:
Aspen, Colorado:
The 160-acre Aspen property, acquired in three transactions, can accommodate up to 30 guests across three lakefront homes. Costner rents this property for $30,000 per night.
Carpinteria, California:
The Costners own a stunning estate comprising three neighboring beachfront properties in Carpinteria, acquired over the years. They previously sold a 7-acre property in the area for $25 million in 2009.
In addition, the Costners own other noteworthy properties in Carpinteria, including a 17-acre undeveloped plot bought for $28.5 million in 2006. A 10-acre property was also listed for sale in 2017 and later withdrawn from the market.
