Born Richard Wayne Van Dyke on December 13, 1925, in West Plains, Missouri, Dick Van Dyke’s parents were Hazel Victoria (née McCord), a stenographer, and Loren Wayne “Cookie” Van Dyke, a salesman. He grew up in Danville, Illinois, alongside his younger brother Jerry Van Dyke, also a thespian.
At the age of 19, Van Dyke left high school and attempted to join the United States Army Air Forces as a pilot during World War II. Initially rejected multiple times due to being underweight, he eventually enlisted as a radio announcer and later became part of the Special Services, entertaining troops.
Career Trajectory
In the late 1940s, Van Dyke kickstarted his career as a radio DJ in his hometown. He dabbled in comedy with pantomime artist Phil Erickson, touring around the West Coast and appearing on the local television program “The Merry Mutes” in Atlanta, Georgia, in the early 1950s.
