What is David Lee Roth’s net worth?

An American singer, songwriter, rock star, radio DJ, and author, David Lee Roth boasts a net worth of $60 million. As a distinguished figure in rock music, he is primarily recognized for his role as the lead vocalist of the famous band Van Halen, which he co-founded in 1974. With his vibrant performances and unique vocal style, Roth added a notable showmanship to the band. Their self-titled debut album in 1978 achieved immense success, launching them into fame with popular hits like “Runnin’ with the Devil” and “Eruption.”

Throughout Roth’s time with Van Halen, a series of hit albums followed, including “1984,” which featured timeless tracks such as “Jump,” “Panama,” and “Hot for Teacher.” His flamboyant persona and dynamic stage presence were essential elements of the band’s character. However, in 1985, creative differences prompted Roth to part ways with Van Halen.

After his exit, Roth ventured into a solo career, debuting with “Eat ‘Em and Smile” in 1986, which received positive acclaim. He continued to release music through the late 1980s and 1990s, achieving varying levels of commercial success. His solo catalog includes notable albums like “Skyscraper” and “A Little Ain’t Enough.”

Occasionally reuniting with Van Halen in the mid-1990s, it wasn’t until 2007 that he rejoined the band officially. This reunion produced a new album, “A Different Kind of Truth,” launched in 2012, marking the first collaboration with Roth on vocals since 1984. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007 as a member of Van Halen.

Early Life

Born on October 10, 1954, in Bloomington, Indiana, David Lee Roth’s father practiced as an ophthalmologist while his mother taught. He has a sister, Lisa Roth, who created the lullaby music series Rockabye Baby. His early years were spent in Bloomington and Swampscott, Massachusetts, before moving to Pasadena, California, during his teenage years. Roth’s passion for music ignited early on, and he attended The Webb Schools in Claremont, California, John Muir High School in Pasadena, and Pasadena City College, where he met Eddie and Alex Van Halen. During this time, he also worked as a hospital orderly.

Van Halen

In his late teenage years, Roth found himself performing solo and with a group named the Red Ball Jets. Another band from Los Angeles, Mammoth, occasionally borrowed the PA system of Roth’s group. It was with Mammoth that Roth was invited to join as their lead singer in 1974, leading them to rename the band Van Halen upon discovering another group held the name Mammoth. In its early stages, Van Halen played both original and cover material before gaining a loyal local following and landing a four-month engagement at the Starwood Club in West Hollywood, California. Gene Simmons discovered the band at the Starwood in 1976, was impressed, and assisted in producing their first demo tape. Early in 1977, a Warner Brothers record executive witnessed Van Halen’s performance at the Starwood and signed them to a record deal.

Their debut album, “Van Halen,” dropped in 1978, followed by five more successful albums over the next seven years with the original five members. Roth played a pivotal role in the band’s success, both as the lead singer and principal lyricist. The synergy between Roth’s lyrics and Eddie Van Halen’s music constructed the signature sound that identified Van Halen throughout the 1980s.

Solo Work

In early 1985, Roth put out the EP “Crazy from the Heat.” The singles “California Girls” and “Just a Gigolo/I Ain’t Got Nobody” gained traction mainly due to Roth’s vibrant personality and lively music videos. Later that year, he parted ways with Van Halen and continued his solo career, releasing “Eat ‘Em and Smile” and subsequently “Skyscraper,” which marked his first international hit with “Just Like Paradise.” He produced two additional solo albums, “A Little Ain’t Enough” in 1991, and “Your Filthy Little Mouth” in 1994, before taking a break from music.

During this hiatus in the late 1990s, Roth took on the role of EMT.

Reuniting With Van Halen

Roth reconnected with Van Halen to create “Best Of Volume 1,” but after a notable appearance at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards, he exited once more to write a memoir titled “Crazy From Heat,” published in 1997.

In February 2007, Roth and Van Halen regrouped, leading to their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March of that same year. The band kicked off their reunion tour in September, which generated over $93 million, marking the highest grossing tour in the band’s history.

In December 2011, Van Halen announced a tour for 2012 featuring Roth. The Roth-led Van Halen album “A Different Kind of Truth” premiered on February 7, 2012, followed by a tour that began that month.

Other Work and Appearances

On October 14, 2012, Roth launched a video webcast titled “The Roth Show” on his YouTube channel, which later expanded to iTunes, covering diverse topics such as creating music videos with Van Halen, tattoos, and his signature sarcasm.

A new live album titled “Tokyo Dome Live in Concert,” recorded during the “A Different Kind of Truth” Tour in June 2013, was released in March 2015. That same month, the band made their first appearance on American television on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, where they also announced a new tour.

In 2018, Roth and tattoo artist Ami James introduced INK the Original, a complete line of skincare products designed to protect tattooed skin. Roth devoted over 300 hours to tattooing in Japan between 2013 and 2014, observing the growth of the body art market.

In 2019, he declared a nine-date solo residency at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino House of Blues in 2020, with shows initially set for January and March. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, performances scheduled for March 18, 20, 21, 25, 27, and 28 were postponed indefinitely.

Additionally, Roth agreed to tour with the band Kiss across 43 cities as an opening act. However, much of this tour was also postponed due to the pandemic.
