Of course myrtle rust is in our native forests; we've only just noticed it in cultivated plants that we tend every day. Watch this space.
The biggest threat to Northland's trees is possums, not myrtle rust. Where were these guardians of the precious forest when possums were deliberately released in Northland in the 1960s to make money off the bounty? Let alone sika deer which are being illegally released in Northland right now for recreational hunting. Rather than lament myrtle rust, something we have no effective way of preventing or controlling, let's focus on threats we can actually do something about.
