Outspoken: Courtney Sina Meredith

Thursday 17th September 2015

Outspoken is a video series about real people who care about real issues.

Courtney Sina Meredith spent her formative years in a state house, and she remembers looking forward to the day she could contribute something great that would have an impact on her community.

Now, as a poet and playwright, Courtney is writing works that are inspired by and tailor-made for young brown women the world over. “I’m not just putting brown girls at the centre of that work because I am necessarily trying to be political. For me that really is my life”.

“I don't understand quite what she means when she says her work wasn't made for white men, but "young brown women, the world over".

So the writing isn't universal. So far, so good. I'm just not sure how brown women around the world are meant to find commonality. Is it in reference to colonialism? That is the only thing I can think of.

Also, Italy seems a very long distance to travel to tell white people that her work isn't for them.
