My Top 5: Maya Payne

Wednesday 27th May 2015

Throughout NZ Music Month we’ll be hearing stories from young musicians about the local songs they love the most. Today, Maya Payne talks about songs from Six60, Lorde, The Naked and Famous, Broods and Kimbra.

After dropping two well-received singles, 'Fragile' and 'If Only'18-year-old Christchurch singer/songwriter Maya Payne is currently working on her debut EP, which is due out soon.

She took a moment to run through the top five New Zealand songs she obsesses over.

Six60 – ‘Lost’ feat. Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra

My aunt actually showed me this song and I instantly fell in love with it. It's one of those tracks that just capture your emotions and gives you mega goosebumps. It's so powerful, beautiful and raw. I love Six60 and it's great seeing how well they are doing.

Lorde – ‘Ribs’

Where do I start? Lorde has opened up so many doors for young up and coming musicians in New Zealand. She has shown people that age doesn't matter and I am so proud and inspired by how hard she has worked and the talent that chick has. ‘Ribs’ has always been my favourite song by Ella and the layered atmospheric vocals and catchy melodies had me hooked from the first listen.

The Naked and Famous - ‘Young Blood’

This one of my many favourites by these guys. This is one of those songs that just make you feel really really good about life. Their catchy electronic melodies and beats topped with Alisa's captivating vocals had me obsessed. I've always loved them and I'm so happy they have been so successful.

Broods – ‘Taking You There’

Another one of Joel Little’s masterpieces. This is my favourite song from their debut album, Evergreen. You know it's a great song when you find yourself listening to it on constant repeat and not getting the slightest bit sick of it. Georgia's vocals are absolutely KILLER. I can't wait to hear more from these two crazy talented kiwis.

Kimbra – ‘Settle Down’

This was the first song I heard from Kimbra. I've always been in awe of her quirky videos and voice. Settle down is catchy and still one of my favourite songs. I'm so proud of how well she has done internationally. I'm looking forward to more stuff from her!
