Nice article. As someone who has been attending gigs regularly at Chick's for years, though, I think Millie's comment about hoping for a 'safer and more accessible' venue to open up is a bit unfair. Chick's is hands down the safest and most accessible venue I've ever experienced. The operators and staff are extremely friendly, open minded and take peoples safety and wellbeing as a very high priority. They have gone absolutely out of their way to be accommodating to people of all ages, genders and all walks of life, and to make the venue a safe and welcoming environment for all. Any music venue / pub is going to have the occasional incident with a drunk or obnoxious punter, but I can say with certainty that at chicks these incidents are very rare and on the odd occasion that someone has acted out or made another person feel uncomfortable, its always been dealt with promptly and with professionalism. Basically, chicks hotel already did 'set an example for the rest of New Zealand' in this regard

Played at chicks on a national tour back when hector had it. Was great to have a place to stay after the show. It was kinda spooky and run down and though I can think of better places to play and sleep I'm glad I got a chance to play there and have that experience. Just another chapter in Dunedin's rich music history. The next one is ready to be written, I'm sure someone will step up.

Here is a clip I shot and cut at Chicks when it opened under Hector back in the day.
