This was not the first gay rugby game. In the 1980's a team from Wellington played an Auckland team in a game of rugby which Auckland won. A return match was organised but it was decided to play rugby league as most of the players were inexperienced and it was thought that it was less likely to have accidents. It was played on a field out near Porirua and Wellington won this encounter. It was reported in the sports news on National Radio the following morning as it was the first time a Wellington team had beaten and Auckland team -provincial or otherwise in a long time. Hopefully someone else can remember more details. Radio archives may still have the recordings of the interviews.
